THE PERMANENT UNDER-SECRETARY AT THE UK HOME OFFICE ABOUT: THE POWER OF HAVING AN OPEN MIND

Welcome to a clip of Sir Matthew Rycroft, the permanent under-secretary at the home office of the United Kingdom, speaking to the Foreign Trade University about the importance of an open mind, which is essential for today’s “flat” world.

“Studying abroad, it’s not the only way of doing things that is possible. But I promise you if you go to the UK or any other country, there will be things that are different about that culture in that country. And suddenly, your eyes will be open to different ways of doing things. It doesn’t mean that the UK is better than Vietnam. It doesn't mean that Vietnam is better than the UK. It just means that on some things, we do things differently. And for me, my eyes were open when I lived abroad for the first time, which in my case was not when I was a student. It was after I was a student and I worked in the British embassy in Paris, France - a neighboring country to the UK but still very different in lots of ways. It gave me an appreciation for how the UK organizes our health service which is very different from France. All sorts of things like that.”
