IS CANADA STILL A PROMISED LAND FOR VIETNAMESE INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS?

Update thứ ba, 04/03/2025

Recently, many young Vietnamese have been asking: "If Trump is re-elected and Prime Minister Trudeau is no longer in office, will Canada change its immigration policies? Will Canada remain an attractive destination for international students?" Political changes can influence global migration trends, but Canada has consistently upheld its welcoming policies for skilled individuals.

The Canadian government continues to offer numerous opportunities for international students to study, work, and reside in this country. Graduates from eligible institutions can apply for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP), allowing them to work for 1-3 years, gain valuable experience, and increase their chances of obtaining permanent residency (PR) through the Express Entry system. Additionally, programs such as the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) and the Atlantic Immigration Program (AIP) provide alternative pathways to expedite PR applications.

Despite political fluctuations, Canada still requires a young and skilled workforce to sustain economic growth. If the U.S. tightens immigration policies, Canada will have a competitive advantage in attracting global talent. Therefore, Vietnamese students still have many opportunities to stay in Canada permanently. The key is to plan strategically from the beginning, take advantage of immigration policies, and turn the Canadian dream into reality!

Here is a step-by-step guide to settling in Canada for Vietnamese students

Step 1: Choose the right school and program

  • Select a school from the list of Designated Learning Institutions (DLI) eligible for PGWP: Designated Learning Institutions List - Canada.ca
  • Choose a major in high-demand fields such as technology, engineering, business administration, finance, healthcare, or education.

Step 2: Graduate and apply for PGWP

  • After completing your studies, you can apply for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) to work in Canada for 1-3 years, depending on the length of your program.

Step 3: Gain work experience and improve your immigration points

  • Accumulate at least one year of full-time work experience in eligible occupations (NOC 0, A, B categories).
  • Improve your English/French proficiency (IELTS General with a minimum of 6.0 in all skills).

Step 4: Apply for permanent residency (PR) via express entry or PNP

Express Entry – Points-Based Immigration System

  • Age: Maximum points for ages 20-29.
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree (120 points), Master’s degree (135 points).
  • Canadian work experience: 1 year (40 points), 2 years (53 points), 3+ years (64 points).
  • Language proficiency: IELTS General (CLB 9+ earns maximum 136 points).
  • Education & work experience from Vietnam also contribute points.

To qualify for PR, students need a minimum CRS (Comprehensive Ranking System) score of around 450-500, however, this minimum score can vary by each draw.

Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) – Provincial Immigration Pathways

  • If you work in a province with its own immigration programs, you may receive a nomination and gain 600 additional points in Express Entry, significantly boosting your chances of PR approval.

Step 5: Obtain Permanent Residency & Prepare for Citizenship

  • Once granted PR, you can live and work in Canada indefinitely.
  • After 3-5 years of residency, you may be eligible to apply for Canadian citizenship.

Canada remains the promised land! But to take full advantage of Canada's immigration policies, students must plan early, select in-demand fields, and meet the necessary criteria.
